Ferrofluid is a conductive lubricant
used for over 30 years in the speaker
industry in the magnetic gap of the voice
coil assembly. It serves as a lubricant,
improves thermal power & damping, aids in
voice coil centering, and reduces
distortion. The quantity dispensed is
critical since it affects many of the
speaker’s characteristics. In addition,
Ferrofluid is a relatively expensive
fluid, ranging from £250 to £500
per litre, and an accurate pump can pay for
itself in fluid saved.
In
addition to being extremely accurate, the
FMI pump is a unique valveless design having
only one moving part. Sapphire-hard ceramic
internal components resist wear and provide
millions of dispenses without downtime for
routine maintenance. The linked article
appeared in the June 2006 edition of Voice
Coil magazine, and details the distinct
advantages of using an FMI pump for
Ferrofluid dispensing, and how the FMI
pump virtually pays for itself in 18 days!.
